OC’s own “So You Think You Can Dance?” contest at CODE Lounge Newport Beach every Wednesday night at 8pm till May 6
1st Place Winners
On the first Wednesday of the month, March 5th, I checked out the first night of a new event at the swanky new OC lounge CODE called “Do You Think You Can Dance,” their own take on the real show “So You Think You Can Dance?” There are 10 dancers competing for the first place prize of $750 (2nd place gets $250) but the granddaddy prize is $5,000 given to the last dancer(s) standing after the 10 week series. There was a huge variety of dance styles shown from hip hop, Bollywood dancer, cloggers, belly dancers, flips and kicks – something for everyone! A team of four entertaining judges (in their own right) make their wild and crazy remarks and score each performer on a scale from 1 to 10.
2nd Place Winners
As a hugely obsessed fan of all dance competition shows I was pleasantly surprised at some of the talent shown last night. There was such a huge diversity of dance styles and it would have been great to see at least two performers dance the same style to compare and contrast. But this event continues on until May 6 so there’s plenty more dancing to come! Auditions are held every Monday at CODE from 2:30 to 5pm. The show is every Wednesday night starting at 8pm and goes till about 10 pm.
I called ahead to make a reservation for dinner for me and my girlfriends so we’d have a table to sit at while we checked out the show. (I would highly recommend doing the same so you’re not left standing around) They had a special menu comprised of various sushi rolls, pizzas and burgers for the event but the prices weren’t too much of a bargain of the regular price. Nevertheless, we enjoyed our order of seared salmon and lime sushi roll, seared albacore with crispy onion and garlic edamame. Throw in some cosmos and an entertaining dance show and it was all well worth it! This is definitely something I’m going to tell all my Facebook friends about to check out every Wednesday night at 8pm.
