A Dangerous Dining Proposal

January 21st, 2010

For a foodie like me, nothing could be more exciting dangerous than the opportunity to savor a cross section of a city’s finest and most popular dining establishments. Being relatively new to Newport, I am truly looking forward to this winter’s Newport Beach Restaurant Week, I mean, who wouldn’t?

And just announced that right after Resto Week is over, from January 29th through March 15th (and yes, that includes my birthday, yay) the Newport Beach Restaurant Association, along with Perrier, a Restaurant Week sponsor and participating restaurants, which range from classics like Oyster’s in Corona del Mar and The Ritz near Fashion Island, to more modern outlets such as Crow Bar – is offering the opportunity to save an additional 20% off food orders and a complimentary bottle of Aqua Panna.

That’s a steal that surely is to save you some bucks in the long run! And speaking of run, I am sure it’s something I’ll be in dire need of come March 16th.

Bon Appétit!

Whale Watching Season is Back!

January 15th, 2010

The beginning of the new year brings many exciting things to Newport Beach’s never ending calendar of events including one of my favorites - Whale Watching Season!!  From January through April, thousands of people flock to the local whale watching/sportfishing vendors (including Davey’s Locker Sportfishing, Newport Landing Sportfishing & Whale Watching, and Paradiso Yacht Charters) for their chance to see one of the approx 26,000 majestic gray whales that travel past the Newport Beach coastline annually.  The whales take a 10 mile voyage from the Artic Sea to Baja which allows visitors and residents several months to enjoy the show!  Everyday sightings are reported and the pictures capture the excitement of the crowd.  Jump on the next boat - I’m sure you won’t be disappointed…Bon Voyage!!

Dinner + Tequila…The “New Black”

January 8th, 2010

SOL Cocina, an innovative Newport Beach restaurant serving delectable Mexican cuisine and an unparalleled waterside location has announced its first “tequila dinner” of 2010.  These tequila dinners are something I, for one, am looking forward to in the New Year!

Set for January 20th and at a price of $50 per person excluding tax and gratuity, SOL is highlighting Corzo tequila, a spirit bottled in something so sleek and modern-looking you may confuse it for a huge bottle of cologne.

The menu looks amazing with three courses introduced by tray-passed cocktails and appetizers, and ending with a pairing of chocolate soufflé cake with Corzo Reposado.

FIRST COURSE

White Corn & Grilled Poblano Soup with Crema & Pepitas

Paired with Corzo Reposado Tequila

SECOND COURSE

Seared sea scallop ‘en nogada’ on tostone with creamy poblano chile sauce, pomegranate seeds and crumbled walnuts

Paired with Corzo Blanco Tequila

THIRD COURSE

Kurobuta pork carnitas and roasted vegetables ‘pipian’ in roasted squash with green mole sauce

Paired with Corzo Anejo Tequila

DESSERT

Fallen chocolate souffle cake with piloncillo caramel sauce, spicy mango / pineapple compote and Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

The District Cocktail Lounge

December 28th, 2009

Originally the Stag bar established back in 1914, the revamped District Cocktail Lounge located on the Peninsula is a local favorite among many.  Without giving it a second thought, I often seem to find myself and several friends in line to get into this cocktail lounge which has become one of the hottest nightlife spots in town.  With the largest selection of vodkas on the peninsula as well as the longest bar in the city (100 feet), the lounge has plenty of music, people, and drinks to keep you entertained throughout the evening.  Last week, we decided to once again hit our stomping grounds and to no surprise we ran into several other friends who were out celebrating a co-worker’s birthday.  The location can’t be beat in that it is only steps away from some of the other most desired nightlife spots including Sharkeez, Blue Beet, and Mutt Lynch’s.  So if you arrive late (10pm or after) and the line seems to be a little intimidating, you can skip jumping in the cab again but rather make a 360 degree turn and determine which of the many options has the shortest line for the evening!

Holiday Blues for a Fashionista

December 22nd, 2009

For a “fashionista” you would think that one would not have the holiday blues considering the amount of nonstop shopping required during the season.  Well, between work and all the personal errands on my list, limited budgets and no time for myself, I just could not get into the spirit this year until this past weekend.

Since my procrastination forced me to limited time, I chose Fashion Island so I could buy everything in one place. Boy, did I improve my mood…

For one, since most of Fashion Island is outside, I could breathe fresh air with views of the Pacific Ocean instead of feeling the typical claustrophobia in a typical mall. Second, dogs are welcomed so even in my “bah humbug” spirit, they managed to put a smile on my face at every turn. (Of course, I am an avid dog lover!) They were even having their pictures made with Santa. Oh so cute!

Now for the icing on the cake - the deals. At almost every store, were deals ranging anywhere from 20% – 70% off. I was able to purchase wonderful gifts this year on my limited budget which really brightened my mood. In addition, with the money I saved, was able to buy a few things for myself! On a final note, I felt so good, I bought a toy and donated a Toys for Tots. How is that for total mood improvement?

I think atmosphere improved my spirits more than anything. Fresh air, dogs and giving back…That is what a Southern California Christmas is supposed to be all about! Fashion Island is located at 401 Newport Center Drive off Pacific Coast Hwy. in Newport Beach, California.

No Money for New Designer Clothes

December 18th, 2009

During the start of the recession last Spring I got terribly depressed when watching the spring fashion shows, frequenting the shopping malls and my favorite shops and even going to the trendy OC nightclubs and restaurants knowing that there was no way I was going to be able to keep up with the “Jones” next door with my new limited budget. I sulked for months…I did not want to sacrifice quality – something ingrained in my Southern up-brining - and yet knew I was too old to shop in the really inexpensive teen “Forever 21 type” stores- no I am not sharing my age…just trust me on this one….

This summer I found a solution that has put a smile back on my face and made me feel like a million dollars! Recycled Designer Clothes Shops. OK, many of my friends would completely frown at the thought of wearing someone’s used clothes – but get this – many of the clothes in these shops haven’t been worn at all…In fact, I was able to pick up a brand new Armani suit that was sized wrong at the tailor, with the tags still in tact, for a fraction of the original cost. Their mistake was my perfect size! These stores also carry designer hand bags, amazing jewelry, shoes, and other great accessories.

Now for the snob side of this unusual shopping business….the recycled shopping spree totally depends on WHERE the store is located. After doing a bit of research on this tricky business, it appears that obviously, the more upscale the area or if the area is located in the heart of a designer/style location the better. For instance, in New York, Soho, an area where quite a bit of fashion models live, there are some of the best recycle shops in the country, etc. Fashion models tend to sell their clothes they often are given after a photo shoot. Wealthy women often sell or donate their evening gowns after a single appearance!

We luck out in Newport Beach and just happen to have two fantastic shops located on Pacific Coast Highway in the Corona del Mar neighborhood. The shops are amazing and have something for every body type and taste. For instance On Que Style, located at 2900 E. Coast Hwy., is the newest recycle shop in town and carries a more hip line of clothes line such as Roberto Cavalli and Pucci. Their lines cater to a younger audience. Recycled Rags, located at 2731 E. Coast Hwy., carries designer clothes for both men and women and has a broader selection for the men.  Recycled rags carries the more traditional lines such as Chanel. I actually love and frequent both stores and since they are literally across the street from each other would never visit one without the other.

Famous Gallo’s in Corona Del Mar

December 16th, 2009

A man always knows when he has just encountered something so special and dare I say it, famous.  No, it’s not the obvious sign that preclaims it so, and no, I’m not being facetious.

You see at Gallo’s Italian Deli in Corona del Mar, famous means something else entirely.  Here “famous” to the dedicated sandwich-makers that take pleasure in recommending the most popular subs means consistently turning that sub around to me, the customer,  bagged and ready to go in literally a matter of seconds.  To Bridgette, the wonderful cash register attendant who’s been part of this establishment for 13 years it means putting a smile on my face, shaking my hand and welcoming me to the neighborhood after having shared what seemed to be a lot of personal details. To the patron chowing down on his favorite creation at the outdoor stand-up counter, exclaiming he’s been eating here for 25 years and loves it, famous means knowing that there is a gem of a place off Coast Highway with a bright blue awning that has been delivering goodness in a roll for a very long time and will probably be here for a long time more to come.

For those who work at Gallo’s and who frequently eat here, this place is truly famous.

Get down to Gallo’s Italian Deli and try the “Combo,” “The Napoleon” or “Hot Pastrami” subs and I guaranteed you too will be an instant fan of this Corona del Mar eatery.
