The Yard House Restaurant located at Fashion Island provides plenty of options for beer lovers! I went with a group of friends last Saturday and although their menu has recently been updated, we were all still able to find a refreshing beer to go with our individual tastes. I always seem to choose one of their many Lost Coast flavors but others branched out and had everything from Black & Blue blends to a good, dependable Stella. Although our timing was a bit off, I would definitely recommend making it to their happy hour for half off appetizers (during football season this deal is extended Monday nights throughout game time). Their California Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll are unlike anywhere else I have gone before…they are designed with the ingredients layered together including fish, cucumber, edamame, avocado and the wasabi soy sauce making a delicious take on sushi that is perfect for sharing. My other recommendations would be their Spinach Cheese Dip - of course! - and their Béarnaise Sliders. Good atmosphere, good beer and always good times!

Yard House at Fashion Island Provides Plenty of Options
Monday, November 30th, 2009Fire pit, Margaritas and More…
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009Javier’s Crystal Cove located in the Crystal Cove Promenade in Newport Coast is still one of the hottest spots in town! My girlfriends and I were finally able to make it to dinner to celebrate yet another birthday - why is it that time seems to fly now that we are getting older? - last Thursday evening. Even the parking lot was hopping!! We pulled up and were greeted immediately with beautiful fire pits and the ambiance of a sophisticated yet inviting environment. Although it looked extremely crowded and we were all afraid that despite our reservations we would be left standing waiting in the busy lobby area, we were seated within 5 minutes of grabbing a round of Javier’s Margaritas from the Cantina. Our table setting was intimate and we were laughing immediately from the server’s welcoming comments and smile. The menu was unique and pleasantly unexpected - including our highly recommended selections of Shrimp Cocktail (not the norm but rather was garnished with cilantro, avocado, delicious freshly chopped salsa fresca and large prawns), Guacamole, Steak Pacado and Seafood Enchiladas. Make sure to add this one to your list!

Amazing food at Champagnes
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009I found the most amazing family owned and operated deli the other day…one worth sharing. Champagnes Deli and Grill has a fabulous menu of fresh salads, sandwiches, and the usual items… homemade bakery treats that you would find at any deli.
What set this deli apart from the many others was the friendly staff who went out of their way to explain the menu and the freshness of their food. As most of you who follow my blog know, I don’t eat beef so naturally I ordered the Greek garden salad which was delish, BUT if I did eat beef, I would have ordered what most of the locals were eating either the meatball sub or the pastrami sandwich. When I questioned the surrounding tables, all claimed they continued to come back time and again because of the sandwiches. Champagnes is located at Mac Arthur Boulevard and Bison across from Newport North Shopping Center. This is one that I will be back. Next time I will try the BBQ Chopped Salad.
Oh by the way, I got dinged the other day for not describing the atmosphere by the smells…So, for this blog, I smelled the aroma of fresh chocolate chip cookies for all those that need to be “smell induced” in order to decide whether or not to try a new restaurant.

2009 Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009
Being new to Newport, I’ve had to learn a lot of things about this great place, including all of the amazing history, the hotels and generally the things to see and do. However, one of the big things coming out of this city that I already knew about even before joining the Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau was that the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is a really big deal. And rightfully so, this event is in its 101st year, that’s a longer run than the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, two other legendary and iconic holiday events.
For me, what sets this event apart is the unique history I’ve recently uncovered and how it all started with a gondolier who in 1908 took a group of visitors from Pasadena across Newport Bay in his gondola which was adorned with Japanese lanterns. A year later that same gondolier, John Scarpa gathered a group of nine of his best buds and created a mini parade of lit vessels. And therein lies the story of the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade! Of course these days, fancy sailboats and multi-million dollar yachts have taken the place of gondolas and paper lanterns, but it’s still a sight to see. Check it out from December 16th - 20th starting at 6:30PM, nightly. For more info go to http://www.christmasboatparade.com or http://www.visitnewportbeach.com.
