The Balboa Bay Club & Resort 6th Annual Newport Beach Food & Wine Festival

Friday, May 29th, 2009

I recently attended the 6th Annual Newport Beach Food & Wine Festival at The Balboa Bay Club & Resort. What an incredible treat. It is the best event of the year and absolutely blew me away with outstanding food, wine, ambiance, service and entertainment.

I was fortunate enough to attend the themed event “South America on the Bay”. Over 20 South American wines were poured, numerous food stations, and a festive salsa band played. I sat there eating my delish paella and drinking an incredible Chilean Chardonnay and realized…it just doesn’t get any better than this! The ticket price of $125 (all inclusive) was well worth it and I even felt they undercharged for the event. . OK, my husband tells me to NEVER tell anyone that! I can’t help it. Honesty is my policy. Anyway, held every year during Memorial Day Weekend, a Festival not to be missed, so put it on your calendars for next year.

Dining as Art at Bayside Restaurant

Thursday, May 21st, 2009

I went to Bayside restaurant today for a delicious farewell lunch (my internship at Newport Beach CVB is sadly coming to an end). I have never been before, and I was delightfully surprised with their mix of delectable cuisine, artistic presentation, and bayside ambiance. Kim and I both chose the Mediterranean Salad with prawns, tomato, cucumber, kalamata olives, and mini peppers. It was absolutely delicious! The peppers added a unique twist to a classic dish.

Audrey and Katie both enjoyed their Sautéed Tiger Prawns, which was served over asparagus risotto. Krystyl ordered the two course lunch deal (with a set price of $19.95 for a starter, entrée, and drink, you can save about $12). She had a heart of romaine salad with fresh shaved parmesan cheese to start. Her entrée, the Simply Roasted Chicken Breast, was a favorite around the table, and our waiter said that it is his highest recommendation as well. It was served over wilted spinach and a lemon sauce and a side of gratin soft polenta.

For dessert, our thoughtful server brought me a warm chocolate soufflé with hazelnut ice cream on the house to celebrate my departure. How sweet!

Bayside truly lived up to its tagline, “creative cuisine that bedazzles the bay.” I cannot wait to go back for either live jazz music at night or their champagne Sunday brunch!

Bessie B. Jeweled, Balboa Island Bovine Beauty

Wednesday, May 20th, 2009

For years she has stood patiently greeting the visitors and locals who stroll and shop the main street of Balboa Island.     If you’re going to have a cow in your front yard, this is the one to have - “Bessie B. Jeweled.”  Most would find being the Island’s “fashion icon” a difficult task, but Bessie is up to it, thanks to her owners at Even Sisters who hand-paint Bessie in dozens of different seasonal costumes. What girl wouldn’t want pj’s custom created for her by local designer Paul Frank!  So popular is Bessie that she was invited to be the official “hostess” to welcome all the cows who stampeded into town for the OC Fair’s 2007 Cowabunga!  Somehow she finds time to participate in the Annual Balboa Island Parade the first Sunday in June.

This is the kind of local humor that makes shopping & dining on Balboa Island so much fun.  The merchants that have been serving this community for years continually seek out unique and distinctive gifts.   Old-fashioned ice cream shops serve up frozen bananas, yogurt, and Balboa Bars, the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon of boutique browsing.   If you aspire to be a fashion icon like Bessie, the trendy clothing boutiques won’t disappoint either.  Serious shopping, however, may demand a caffeine infusion.  I believe Bessie prefers a triple nonfat/half-decaf/mocha latte to keep her girlish figure.  Although she hasn’t quite got the autograph thing down yet, she will pose for a picture with you!

Nightlife Begins at 9am!! 3-Thirty-3 Restaurant

Tuesday, May 19th, 2009

In celebration of a friend’s birthday, I headed over to 3-Thirty-3 to enjoy some drinks and light appetizers with friends.  The restaurant is most definitely known for its “Build Your Own Bloody Mary’s” that are served weekend mornings starting at 9am. They provide the vodka and ice and let you select the rest from a LONG list of ingredients including tomato juice, fresh lime, celery stalks, asparagus, wasabi, black or green olives - do I need to go on?!?  If that’s not to your liking, they have plenty of other options that never fail to impress.  Several specialty cocktails were reasonably priced and after sharing a few of the delicious starters, Thai Calamari and Ahi Poke, we were all content in enjoying the beautiful harbor view.  Since we started pretty early (9am!) we definitely didn’t make it to experience their Late Night Dining menu but from what I have heard it’s a wonderful alternative to the greasy, fast food restaurants that seem to be the only places open ’til 1:30am.

A little bit of New York Italian in Newport Beach, CA

Monday, May 18th, 2009

As I have mentioned in several of my foodie blogs, I am always on the lookout for good “New York” Italian restaurants. Part of the reason is my husband is full-blooded Italian and our favorite all-time restaurants are found in North Beach in San Francisco, the Italian district and in New York City. Our latest fun local find is Ciao Italian Restaurant located on Balboa Island.

The restaurant is a hangout for the residents of Balboa Island who literally walk or ride their bikes to dine. It is indeed owned by two prior New Yorkers…Anthony & Joann so we were naturally drawn to the spot.

Ciao is one of the few restaurants in Newport Beach where we have been able to find rapini which for any true Italian, is a staple delicacy. Rapini reminds me of my Southern Turnip Greens – a little bitter but mixed with olive oil, garlic and spices, comes out quite nice. Ciao has an excellent Rapini Cimino Pasta Dish!

In addition to our rapini find, the restaurant has an adorable small bar in the back which gives it an unforgettable atmosphere. We met our NBF (new best friends) there Tom and Emily.

Celebrities Spotted at the 2009 Newport Beach Film Festival

Thursday, May 7th, 2009

Thank you to everyone who followed my Live from the Red Carpet Tweets during the Newport Beach Film Festival which sadly came to a close last Thursday :( It was such a great week filled with amazing after-parties, great films, drinks flowing courtesy of Absolut Vodka and delicious food from some of Newport’s finest restaurants.

I have to say that (500) Days of Summer starring Zooey DeChanel and Joseph Gordon Levitt was one of my favorite filmsfrom the 8 movies I was able to catch out of the 450 films shown throughout! This was such a great movie choice to close the event that was both funny and heart-felt, in my opinion. And the director Mike Webb who happens to be our Newport Beach Councilman Donn Webb’s nephew, was there on closing night to introduce the West Coast Premier of his own brilliant and hilarious film! If you have any favorite films you caught during the Newport Beach Film Festival, feel free to comment on this blog and share with the rest of us!

Here are some of the celebrities I spotted at the 2009 Newport Beach Film Festival:

New 90210 hottie Adam Gregory who also stars in the new Zac Effron hit movie “17 Again” and “Hannah Montana” the movie was there on opening night and also spotted at the Fashion Island after party and post party at Sports Club LA.
The star of HBO’s hit “Entourage” Adrien Grenier was sitting two rows back from me at the premier of “That’s it. That’s All” a snowboarding documentary with famed snowboarder Travis Rice. This film had amazing cinematography
Mega-film producer/director McG, a Newport Beach native (who also co-owns “A Restaurant” here in Newport Beach) was named “Honorary Chairman” for the Newport Beach Film Festival. McG also hosted a free filmmaker seminar where he showed a few sneak peaks on his new “Terminator Salvation” movie coming to theatres soon.
Kyle Howard (first picture on right) who you may know from the sitcom “My Boys” was there for the premier of his latest movie Made for Each Other which also stars Lauren German , Danny and Chris Masterson (second picture with German) who were hanging out at the Sports Club LA after party after the movie premier.
Ryan Sheckler, another OC native and star of MTV reality hit show “Life with Ryan” was on the red carpet for his latest movie “Street Dreams” along with the entire movie cast, who played to a sold out audience.

Strappy Sandals are the new Trend

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

OK, I normally don’t blog about fashion, but my attendance at the Newport Beach Film Festival Opening Night sparred my interest…SHOES….The new style of black strappy sandals was the rage..The cool thing is sometimes I adore shoes on the rack, but when on the feet, look awkward. The heavy strapped sandals looked good on everyone and with all types of outfits from dress jeans to shorts to skirts. These are a “must purchase” for summer and in fact, I am headed to Fashion Island tonight in search of the perfect pair!
