Newport Beach Film Festival Event Could Use a Little “Hairspray!”

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Last year while attending the Newport Beach Film Festival I had the good fortune to experience one of those rare magical evenings that only come along once-in-a-lifetime. You know, the kind of night you go out with your spouse and friends and the stars align – everyone is in a great mood, the food and drinks are great, the company is perfect and the entertainment is unforgettable.

It occurred in the Palm Garden of The Island Hotel Newport Beach. The festival was sponsoring a gala reception and concert with Academy Award winning composer Richard M. Sherman. Now you may not know his name immediately, but his songbook (created in collaboration with his brother Robert), literally provided the soundtrack to our childhoods – songs for such films as The Parent Trap, Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, The AristoCats, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, (and for good or bad – they also wrote the song “It’s a Small World”).

Mr. Sherman was charming and regaled the audience with performances of his many hits along with the often-humorous stories behind each tune. Everyone seemed to be able to pick out a favorite or two (or three or more). It was an outstanding evening and those of us in attendance I think all intrinsically realized we had just witnessed pure magic on the stage.
This year the festival is again hosting a gala reception and concert, this time with Oscar nominated film composer and Tony and Grammy Award winner Marc Shaiman.

Again, you may not know his name right off the top of your head but you definitely have enjoyed his work. Shaiman is best known as the award-winning composer/lyricist for the hit Broadway show “Hairspray” (along with the recent hit movie adaptation).

A five-time Oscar nominee (Sleepless in Seattle, The American President, The First Wives Club, Patch Adams, and South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut) Shaiman is sure to highlight his film score and song credits, which also include such hit films as When Harry Met Sally, Beaches (partially filmed in Newport Beach), Misery, City Slickers, A Few Good Men, Sister Act, The Bucket List and, of course, Hairspray.

Shaiman is allegedly known for his wicked sense of humor. This is no surprise considering he used to write for “Saturday Night Live” and co-wrote Billy Crystal’s classic movie title song medley for the Academy Awards.

It promises to be another great evening. I would encourage anyone who’s looking for a singularly unique evening (at very reasonable ticket prices) to indulge in “A Little Hollywood Night Music” with Marc Shaiman. The festival should be congratulated for presenting this little-know gen of events within the festival.

Why not check out Y-3?

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

There’s a new store at Fashion Island that I’ve just fallen in love with!  Y-3 is a collaboration between famous Japanese fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto and Adidas, which opened just a week and a half ago. Y-3 carries sporty yet sleek styles for men and women (including shoes, accessories, bathing suits) that you can wear out, look good, and feel comfortable without looking like you just got out of the gym! The line features a basic palette of mostly black, white and grey, yet its attention to details and edgy silhouettes is what sets it apart from your average black tee.

I’m obsessed with this striped duffel bag which would make a great weekender bag or even something I could take to the beach!

Y-3 at Fashion Island Newport Beach is the first store in California that carries its entire line for men, women and accessories.  Other locations include New York and Miami.

Y-3 is located at Fashion Island next to the Terrace food court.  www.shopfashionisland.com

New Happy Hour in Newport Beach

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

Arguably the best view in town, 21 Oceanfront has always been a place for live entertainment, prime steaks and spectacular sunsets.  So of course I had no other choice than to head over to the Newport Pier after hearing that they just began their new happy hour!  From 4pm-6pm Sunday-Friday, you can pull up a seat in their oceanfront lounge and enjoy 50% off appetizers, $6 well drinks and house wine.  They feature Blue Ice American Vodka and Margaritaville Spirits that are sure to start off the evening in style.  After chatting with the bartender about everything from the Final Four NCAA Tournament to the upcoming Newport Beach Film Festival, I was ready to head out to a few of the other restaurants/bars that are located only a few steps away.

Segway into this…

Monday, April 6th, 2009

When was the last time you rode around squealing and laughing out loud?  Want to experience that same childhood thrill all over again?  Segway is your ticket to ride and it is more fun than should be allowed by law (or at least within the 8 mph speed limit!)  These “personal people-movers” completely liberate you from everything you’ve ever known about getting around.

If I can ride a Segway, anyone can do this!  As one whose entire childhood was one remarkable epoch of staggering crash ‘n burn episodes, the first time I rode a Segway, I just couldn’t quit laughing like a 4 yr. old.  This is the same kind of “rush” you get on a perfect downhill ski run, masterful putt to the green, your backhand sails over the net – you get the picture.

Of course, it helps that you’re not in this alone – all rentals are “Glided Tours” led by one of the talented staff at the Segway store in Balboa Village on the Peninsula – perfect location for the training session they give you in Balboa Park at the Pier.  The whole balance thing is governed by the inner gyroscope that you keeps you upright so the rest is easy.  Get in touch with your inner child – round up some buddies in need of adventure and go for it!

Zinc is for Veggie Lovers!

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

As many of you have read in my past blogs that I am close to being a vegetarian. Anyway, I have found the most amazing vegetarian unpretentious restaurant in Corona del Mar, Zinc Café & Market, located at 3222 E. Pacific Coast Highway. The selection is fabulous with my favorite the balsamic veggie salad. They also have a soybean salad that is unbelievable. The place has a local following and those guests in front of me seem to have their standard dishes and favorites. The outdoor patio is the perfect way to “Zen” during lunch! What is also cool about Zinc is you can place an order “to go” for parties, dinner at home, etc. A “must visit”…especially for vegetarians or those that are close to being one. Maybe I will just call myself a veggie lover! Visit http://www.zinccafe.com/  for more information.

Muldoon’s Offers More Than Just a Fun Pub Atmosphere

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

St. Patty’s Day came quick this year. Is anyone else shocked that it’s April?!?! Anyways my friends and I decided to head over to Muldoon’s Dublin Pub & Celtic Bar to kick-off the weekend.  To our surprise, we got a lot more than the Guinness and Newcastle that we were hoping for.  Muldoon’s hosts live local music Friday-Sunday every week and it is FREE to the public.

The band was great and there were several people dancing and singing along to everything from U2 to Sublime.  Since there are two pubs plus the open air patio, the best part was that we never felt cramped and didn’t have to wait long at the bar.  We grabbed a table in the smaller pub and were able to catch up while playing a round of darts - not my best sport!!  The night was a lot of fun and I’ll definitely be checking out their calendar of events before next St. Patty’s Day rolls around!http://www.muldoonspub.com/calendar.asp

Experience the Coast by Whale Watching

Whale Watching

This past weekend my husband and I experienced the Newport Landing Whale Watching Excursion. It was a beautiful Sunday morning – warm and not a cloud in the sky…OK, I have to brag as the rest of the country was under snow!

We had a special two for one offer which was a great deal and a great inexpensive way to spend a weekend morning. Only $30 for both of us and we rented binoculars for another $8. I would recommend you bring your own to save you the expense though.

Anyway, we left from the Boardwalk with about 60 people and it was a large enough boat so everyone had a place to view and even to sit. I was a bit worried about the excursion since I usually get sea sick, but the waters were extremely  smooth and the boat is quite large, so  no problems.

There was a naturalist on board who gave a fantastic sea life overview throughout the experience. We saw sea lions, but unfortunately, those large gorgeous whales were just not in the mood to play with us. We spent about two and a half hours out on the open water with a beautiful view of the coast line so we really were not disappointed when we did not see the spectacular whales during the migration.

The good news is they gave everyone on the boat a voucher for a future visit which is their standard practice when they don’t spot the whales. This is the real thing, so can’t conjure up a whale for the tourists’ benefit…right? Anyway, thought it was a perfect way to enjoy Newport Beach and we will be back for our continued search of the big blue and gray.
