Whale Watching Season is Back!

Friday, January 15th, 2010

The beginning of the new year brings many exciting things to Newport Beach’s never ending calendar of events including one of my favorites - Whale Watching Season!!  From January through April, thousands of people flock to the local whale watching/sportfishing vendors (including Davey’s Locker Sportfishing, Newport Landing Sportfishing & Whale Watching, and Paradiso Yacht Charters) for their chance to see one of the approx 26,000 majestic gray whales that travel past the Newport Beach coastline annually.  The whales take a 10 mile voyage from the Artic Sea to Baja which allows visitors and residents several months to enjoy the show!  Everyday sightings are reported and the pictures capture the excitement of the crowd.  Jump on the next boat - I’m sure you won’t be disappointed…Bon Voyage!!

2009 Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009

Being new to Newport, I’ve had to learn a lot of things about this great place, including all of the amazing history, the hotels and generally the things to see and do. However, one of the big things coming out of this city that I already knew about even before joining the Newport Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau was that the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade is a really big deal.  And rightfully so, this event is in its 101st year, that’s a longer run than the Tournament of Roses Parade and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, two other legendary and iconic holiday events.

For me, what sets this event apart is the unique history I’ve recently uncovered and how it all started with a gondolier who in 1908 took a group of visitors from Pasadena across Newport Bay in his gondola which was adorned with Japanese lanterns.  A year later that same gondolier, John Scarpa gathered a group of nine of his best buds and created a mini parade of lit vessels. And therein lies the story of the Newport Beach Christmas Boat Parade!  Of course these days, fancy sailboats and multi-million dollar yachts have taken the place of gondolas and paper lanterns, but it’s still a sight to see.  Check it out from December 16th - 20th starting at 6:30PM, nightly.  For more info go to http://www.christmasboatparade.com or http://www.visitnewportbeach.com.

HALLOWEEN “ISLAND-STYLE”

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Looking for that friendly neighborhood Halloween you remember from your childhood?
Nowhere is that more easily attainable than by just walking over the bridge to Balboa Island.
Island homeowners and merchants go all out for this annual fun fest dressing in costume to
hand out the goodies.

When I first moved here I thought everybody must work for studio prop departments the homes were so lavishly and creatively decked out, and it’s just gotten better over the years.  This is Trick or Treating the way it was meant to be – safe, easy, silly and fun – even the pets get in on the action!

With no gifts to be purchased, no grand dinners to be prepared, Halloween allows the kid in all of us to emerge for one crazy night.  If you need proof, just show up at the Annual Costume Party hosted by The Village Inn.  Whether costumed or not, you can enjoy great music by The Rick Sherman Duo.  Who needs a theme park when you’ve got the real thing right here, right now – it’s all on Island time.

DAY TRIPPIN’:New Tours Make Catalina Even More Fun (Part 2)

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

As promised, here is the second part of things you can do in a day at Catalina Island.

Catalina was originally developed by the Wrigley Family of Chicago as a spring training camp for the Cubs, and their beautiful Georgian Colonial built in 1921 is now the Inn at Mt. Ada - great place for lunch with a stellar view overlooking the harbor (advance reservations required).  Another historic home converted to a hotel is the western author Zane Grey’s.  Then there’s the 1st Tuna Angling Club almost next door to the Casino which hosted such notables as Theodor Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and Cecile B. DeMille, while promoting sportsmanship for big game fishermen.

DAY TRIPPIN’:New Tours Make Catalina Even More Fun (Part 1)

Friday, July 10th, 2009

“26 Miles Across the Sea, Santa Catalina is Waiting For Me…….” Popular song back in the ‘50s, popular place - and just as much fun today!  Catalina Island is the perfect day escape to an island paradise that doesn’t involve anything more arduous than boarding the Catalina Flyer in Newport Harbor.  The trip itself is half the adventure – from the moment you pull out of Newport Harbor and watch the coastline recede, until Avalon rises up to meet you just a little over an hour later - you might encounter dolphins, grey or blue whales depending on the season, cargo freighters, sailboats and seagulls.  The sea wind whipping through your hair and the salt air create an exhilarating start to any day!

The hardest part is deciding how to spend your time once you arrive as the choices are many, so I am going to be doing a 4 part series blog about the different tours you can partake on the Island.  So, in addition to swimming, snorkeling, hiking, biking, kayaking, or enjoying one of the Island Conservancy’s fabulous Jeep tours, some exciting new tours kick off this summer that promise to make visits even more of an adventure:  One of the is a new GPS Walking Tour enables you to discover Island landmarks on your own, and the one I can’t wait to experience: the Catalina Seatrek Eco Tour where we get to view underwater gardens and a sea wrecked vessel wearing a wetsuit and helmet that looks like something out a Jules Verne novel.

This fun 2.5-hour educational tour is a fun combination of group theatre and ‘who-done-it’ mystery as participants go back in time to see what really happened in Crystal Cove’s Historic District.  Read for a 1930’s Crystal Cove film shoot, investigate the case of the ‘missing’ cottage, shop for candy from a 1935 beachside store, and determine if the Crystal Cove resident named Shorty really had a pet sea lion that lived in his bathtub.  Crystal Cove’s beach cottages were built between 1920 and 1935 and, in their own wonderful way, tell the story of California’s history.  This Living History program is a fun introduction to the colorful characters that lived in Crystal Cove’s Historic District.  Class size limited to 20.

Dates: Fridays, 9 am – 11:30 am; July 1 through September 15
Cost: $25 for adults/$20 for Crystal Cove Alliance Members
